Make and illustrate your book in NFE Studios, then export an EPUB for the Kindle eBook and a print PDF at a KDP trim size for the paperback. Sign in at kdp.amazon.com, create a title, upload both files and a cover, disclose the AI-generated content, set your price and publish. You upload the files yourself.
NFE Studios doesn’t publish on Amazon for you. You upload the files to Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) yourself, which keeps you in control of pricing and royalties. KDP describes itself as offering “free and simple tools to self-publish your book.” Below is the whole path, with Amazon’s own specs linked at each step.
Create your story in NFE Studios and illustrate every page. Set your cast with reference images first, then use Illustrate all so the whole book is drawn in one pass with the same characters on every page. Re-roll any page that misses. Writing is free; images cost 15 tokens each in standard quality or 60 in high quality (pricing).
Publishing needs a pay-as-you-go account. The free plan is watermarked and has no commercial rights; adding tokens removes the watermark and includes commercial rights. Start with the AI children’s book creator, or illustrate a manuscript you already wrote.
Trim size is your printed book’s width and height. KDP says “The most common trim size for paperbacks in the U.S. is 6 x 9 inches.” Picture books often use a square or larger size. NFE Studios exports print PDFs in five KDP sizes:
Page count: KDP’s trim-size table sets limits by size and ink. For an 8.5″ × 8.5″ book, it lists “24 - 590” pages for black ink on white paper and for premium color, but “72 - 600” for standard color. A short picture book printed in color may need premium color, or extra pages such as a dedication or an about-the-author page.
Bleed: bleed is when art runs to the very edge of the page. KDP explains that such objects “must extend past where the page will be trimmed by 0.125″ (3.2 mm),” so a bleed file is larger than the trim size. For a 6 × 9 book, KDP says to “set the page size to 6.125 x 9.25 inches.” KDP also notes, “Bleed is only supported for fixed-format files like print-ready PDFs.”
NFE Studios’ print PDF is set at the exact trim size with a print-safe inside margin, and it doesn’t add a bleed area. So choose No bleed when you upload, and for the print edition use page layouts that keep art inside the margins rather than the full-bleed layout. KDP: Set trim size, bleed, and margins.
KDP rejects files that break its print rules, so check these before you upload. The most common problems are text too close to the edge, low-resolution images and unembedded fonts. Here are KDP’s own minimums:

Your book text stays the same whether you export a book, a storybook PDF, or later turn the same project into a film. You can publish the book first and make the movie later.
eBooks and paperbacks need different cover files. For the eBook, KDP’s ideal is “2,560 pixels in height x 1,600 pixels in width,” as a TIFF or JPEG, and the file “must be less than 50MB.” For the paperback, the cover wraps the front, spine and back, and KDP states, “All book covers on KDP require bleed.”
The simplest route is to use one of your NFE Studios illustrations as the cover art and build the paperback cover in KDP’s Cover Creator, which handles the spine and bleed for you.
Sign in at kdp.amazon.com with your Amazon account and complete your tax and payment details so you can be paid royalties. Then create a new Kindle eBook (for the EPUB) and/or Paperback (for the print PDF).
Enter your title, author name, description, keywords and categories. Use plain words a parent or reader would actually search for, like “bedtime story about sharing,” rather than clever titles alone.
Upload your EPUB or print PDF and your cover, then open KDP’s previewer and page through the whole book. Look for text near the edges, blurry images and blank pages. When KDP asks about AI content, answer yes and describe what was AI-generated, such as the text, the interior images and the cover.
KDP draws a line between the two kinds of AI use: content “created by an AI-based tool” is AI-generated, even with edits, while “You are not required to disclose AI-assisted content.” KDP content guidelines.
Choose your territories, royalty option and list price, then click Publish. KDP’s timelines page says a new eBook’s detail page can take “Up to 72 hours” to appear, and it can take “Up to 72 hours after your book is live” to show in search results. KDP timelines.
Commercial rights from NFE Studios (on pay-as-you-go) let you sell what you make. Copyright registration is a separate question. The U.S. Copyright Office concluded in January 2025 that AI outputs “can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements,” which can include “creative arrangements or modifications of the output, but not the mere provision of prompts.” Your own writing, edits and choices matter.
